The availability of air is essential for the development of the roots of your crops. The roots need to breathe as an airy substrate produces more root hairs. Oxygen is needed to convert sugar into energy. This energy allows the roots to spread and provide more nutrients for the rest of the crop.
It is therefore important that a substrate has a high percentage of air. Any airy substrate will provide adequate drainage and a continuous supply of air.
